Volgograd, Russia- With Japan advancing to the knockout round of the World Cup for the first time in two tournaments, Japanese people had mixed reactions. In the waning minutes of the match, Japan tried to run down the clock and didn’t try to score (1). Such play resulted in boos from spectators at the stadium, while some fans encouraged Japanese players, saying, “I want to see the Japanese among the eight teams in the quarterfinals.” Japan lost to Poland 1-0 on Thursday in its final group match, but still reached the knockout round thanks to fewer yellow cards and other factors. Meanwhile, back in Japan, fans were also expressing mixed views over the team’s play. At JR Shinbashi Station in Minato Ward, Tokyo, Kenta Segawa, a company employee of Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, said, “If Japan had lost the game, there would have been much more criticism, so I think the decision to focus on the actual benefits was good (2).” A company president in Edogawa Ward, Tokyo, said, “Despite the boos, Japan narrowly won the gamble. I praise the decision of the coach Nishino.” At JR Osaka Station in Kita Ward, Osaka, a company employee in Koryo, Nara Prefecture, expressed disappointment, saying: “In order to advance to the next stage, it was inevitable for Japanese players to pass the ball among themselves to keep it in the last minutes. But I wanted them to be aggressive until the end.” A company employee of Suita, Osaka Prefecture, said: “I’m not fully satisfied with the match (3) . But the previous matches were exciting with higher ranked countries, so I would consider the result satisfactory.”

●部分的訳と解説●
(1) In the waning minutes of the match, Japan tried to run down the clock and didn’t try to score. 試合の終盤、日本はボールをキープして時間を稼ぎ、点をとりにいこうとしなかった。“run down” は、「流れ落ちる、走り下る、止まる、衰える、突き止める」など様々な表現ができます。今回は、時間を止める意味合いで使われています。
(例1) The clock has run down (=stopped). 時計が止まった。他の意味でも見て見ましょう。
(例2) I laughed till tears ran down my face. 涙が出るほど笑った。
(例3) You look quite run down. あなたは相当参っているようだ。
(2) If Japan had lost the game, there would have been much more criticism, so I think the decision to focus on the actual benefits was good. もし日本が試合に負けていたら、もっと多くの批判が寄せられていただろから、実際の利益にフォーカスした今回の判断は良かったと思う。
少し苦手な方も居るかもしれません･･･仮定法過去完了です。“If S had 過去分詞～, S would have 過去分詞～” で過去の事実の逆や願望を表現できるので日常生活でもよく使われ、使いこなせるととても便利です。 “would”を“could”に変換することで、「出来ただろうに」と能力や可能性も表現することができます。
(例) If I had had money, I could have bought a ticket. お金があれば、チケットを買えただろうに。(≒お金を持っていなかったら買えなかった。)
(4) I’m not fully satisfied with the match. 私は、この試合は完全には満足していない。
“I’m not (fully/completely/quite) satisfied with～”で「～に(完全に)満足していない」と言う意味になります。 “I didn’t like the match.” の様な直接的な否定ではなく、批判のニュアンスを少し弱めて、インダイレクトに不満であることを相手に伝えることが出来ます。fullyやcompletelyを間に入れることで、「(満足できる点もあるが)完全には満足していない」と一部肯定の意味が加わり、さらに丁寧な表現となります。ビジネスにおいても使える表現ですので、ぜひ覚えてくださいね。
