毎月行われているYYクラブのディスカッションの概要（英訳と日本語訳あり）

今回のテーマは7月にロシアで行われたワールド・カップ（FIFA主催）での日本チームの活躍に関するトピックスです。
この大会時期（7月）には興奮してTVにかじりついて夜更かしで翌朝、寝坊していたことを思い出します。今はそれから、既に2か月が過ぎつつあり、もうすっかり忘れられていることと思いますので、先ずは、振り返ってみましょう！　特に、日本チームに的を絞って述べます。

Today’s topic is the SAMURAI BLUE (Japan national football team) at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. I remember staying up very late to watch the football games and sleeping in next morning during its tournament. Since it’s been two months, let’s look back on the World Cup and focus on the Japan national football team. 

1. Progress of tournament match at the World Cup
   (1) Every country including Japan was divided into eight groups of four teams each. Japan Group H had three matches against Poland, Senegal, and Colombia in the group stage. Each team is scheduled for three matches against other teams in the same group and the top two teams advance to the final stage. Therefore, sixteen groups can reach the finals. As a result, Colombia and Japan advanced to the knockout round from Group H. However, there was a mixed reaction against Japan. Senegal had the same number of goals scored as Japan, however, Japan reached out the knockout round thanks to fewer yellow cards and other factors.
   (2) In the knockout round, Japan had a first match against Belgium. Japan scored the first two points of the game, but Belgium came from the behind and Japan was beaten 3-2 by Belgium.
   (3)  World Cup Final (Fig.1)
   France and Croatia played for all the glory at the final and France won the game. The news that President Macron from France and President Putin from Russia attended the closing ceremony became the topic of conversation at that time.  

2. The problems of Japan strategy at the World Cup
   Let’s see the Japan strategy at the Japan-Poland match which led to mixed reaction in the world.
   (1) Poland scored its goal in the second half of the match. Japan basically had to attack, however, Japan didn’t try to score and tried to run down the clock in the last 15 minutes. As a result, Japan lost to Poland 1-0.
   (2) Because of this, the audience booed the Japan national team.
   (3) The reason for this strategy (Team players followed instructions from the coach.)
   On the same day at almost the same time, there was a Senegal-Colombia match. The Japanese team had been informed during the match that Senegal was losing to Colombia 1-0. If the Japan-Poland match had ended without any charge in this circumstance, Japan would reach out the knockout round because Japan had fewer yellow cards than Senegal. Therefore, Japan coudln’t have another cards during that match and the coach decided to focus on defending, which meat trying to run down the clock, not attacking. This strategy disappointed the audience and it wasn’t something that was praised.

From the above, let’s see the following discussion about Japan strategy between Akiko and Benjamin as always.

Akiko: Which team was playing against Japan at the last match in thegroup stage?

Benjamin: It was Poland. Poland experienced difficult games in the previous matches. If Poland had lost the game against Japan, it was said that they could have received a torrent abuse from their country. What was the result?

Akiko: Poland tried hard to take back their reputation and scored the first point of the game. Japan wanted to catch up with Poland in the second half of the match, however, Poland was standing firm on defending. In the last 15 minutes, the head coach Nishino had to make a difficult decision.

Benjamin: At that time, coach Nishino called captain Hasebe to give him an order.

Akiko: What was the order? After Hasebe came back to the match, Japan tried to run down the clock by passing and receiving the ball. Why did they do that?

Benjamin: I think Japan was getting information about Senegal-Colombia match at the bench side.

Akiko: What information?

Benjamin: Senegal was in the same situation as Japan and was losing to Colombia 1-0.

Akiko: Therefore, coach Nishino called Hasebe and instructed him to pass and receive the ball to gain some time and not to lose any more points. He thought Japan could survive this tournament because Japan had fewer yellow cards than Senegal. It was a risky gamble. If Senegal had made another score, Japan would have dropped out the group stage. That must
have been a horrible result.

Benjamin: All the matches are for players and audience. As you can imagine, Japan’s  national team received loud boos from the spectators.

Akiko: Japanese audience must have been really disappointed, too. Japan national team was called “SAMURAL Japan”, however, they didn’t seem like SAMURAL in this match.

Benjamin: In the sports games, all players should try their best!! If players don’t, it will be called “a fixed game”, especially in Sumo wrestling matches.

Akiko: If they try their best and can’t win the game, that’s totally fine because that’s all they have. As indeed, Japan national team lost the first match in the knockout round. Just the same.

Benjamin: I think Japan national team should have tried their best even if they have lost the game. Otherwise, we can’t call the team “SAMURAI”

Akiko: True. If they continue using this strategy, they should change their name into “Nadeshiko Japan”.

Benjamin: I also think changing rules are needed to avoid these strategies in the games.

１．ワールド・カップでの日本チームの試合経過
（１）     日本のサムライ・ジャパンを含め各国チームは8つのグループに分けられている。1グループ・４か国から構成され、その内、日本のいるグループは（日本、ポーランド、セネガル、コロンビア）間でリーグ戦が行われた。即ち、この段階では、各グループ構成チームのから総合得点で上位2チームが選ばれて、次の上位16チームに入ることができる。即ち、このリーグ戦を勝ち取った16のチームは次のトーナメントに進めることとなる。（この時の日本チームの挙動は問題がある）結果は、このグループから日本とコロンビアが何とか上位16チームに入ることができた。しかし、日本チームがリーグ最終戦で、ポーランドと対戦した時、同じグループのライバル・セネガルと（同じく負けでありながら）同点スコアであり、イエロー・カードが少なかったため（セネガルが落ち、）日本が上位に選ばれることができた。
（２）     その後に上位16か国チーム間での戦いはトーナメント形式で行われ、日本は初戦でベルギーチームと対戦し、前半で２－０で勝ち進めていた。しかし、後半、ベルギーが逆転し、日本は惜しくも２－３で敗れ、敗退した。
（３）     その後の試合：決勝までの状況：（詳しくは表１を参照）
決勝戦はフランスとクロアチアで争われた。そして、フランスが優勝した。表彰式の「セレモニーには、優勝国の元首が参列して沸かせた。フランスはマクロン大統領とロシア・プーチンア大統領が肩を並べていた。

２．日本チームの試合運びについて問題点
前記の試合経過（１）において、日本選手（含む、監督）の試合運びが次の様であった。（問題点となる場面）
（１）     前半にポーランドに1点先取されて、後半に入った。本来であれば、残り15分あれば、得点するため懸命に相手を攻めるべきであるが、日本チームはこの残り15分を攻めることなく、ピッチでお互いにボールをパス回して時間を稼いで試合を終了させた。結果として日本は０－１でポーランドに敗退した。
（２）     この様な試合運びで当然、観客はブーイングであった。
（３）     このような試合運びを行った理由：（監督の指示で選手は試合を進めた結果である。）
同日、ほぼ同時間帯に、別のピッチで同じグループのセネガル対コロンビア戦が行われていた。試合はセネガルが０－１でコロンビアに負けていた。（この情報を日本チームは得ていた。）この時の状況で試合が進めば、最終戦で総合すると、グループ中の順位は（1位）コロンビア、（2位）日本とセネガルが並んび、同点であればイエローカードの点が少ない日本チームが優位となるためであった。従って日本としてはこれ以上の失点は許されず、守りに専念する作戦に出たのである。即ち、同点で終わらせるためには、敵にボールを渡さないように時間稼ぎをすることとしたためである。観客は積んぼ桟敷である。褒められたことではない。

以上から、この日本チームの取った戦略について、その是非をいつもの通り、二人のディスカッションを行う。
Ａ：日本は最初のリーグ戦・最終試合はどこと対戦したの？
Ｂ：ポーランドが相手で、ポーランドは既に生き残れない成績であった。即ち、ポーランドはこのまま日本に負けたのであれば、「無事に帰国できないであろう？（袋叩きに合うと）」とまで言われていた。その後どうなった？
A：そこで、彼らは日本を相手に、メンツを取り戻すべく頑張った。1点先取して、後半戦に入って、日本は1点でも得点して、追いつきたいところであった。しかし、どちらも譲らず、最後の15分となった、どうするか日本の西野監督は悩んだ末に決断したのであろう。
Ｂ：この時、司令塔・長谷部が監督に呼ばれた。何かの指示があったのであろう。
A：どの様な指示がったのであろうか？
A：長谷部がピッチに戻って以降、日本チームはボールを離さず、パス回しで時間を稼いでいた。なぜか？
Ｂ：ベンチサイドで、他の試合・セネガル戦の情報を入手していた思われる。
A：どの様な情報かしら？
Ｂ：「（日本と同じ、）セネガルはコロンビアを相手に０－１で負けつつあった。」と。
A：そこで、監督はこれ以降、日本が同じ得点差であれば、イエローカード数が少ない日本が生き残れると判断して、長谷部を呼び、時間稼ぎをして、これ以上の失点を内容に動くこととした。一つの賭けであるが、もし、セネガルが得点すれば、日本は負けが決定する。それこそ袋叩きだある。
Ｂ：試合は選手のものであり、また観客の物である。当然、この時の試合を見ていた観客は大いなるブーイングをしていた。
A：日本の観客もどうしたものかとキョトンとしていたに違いない。何がサムライ・ジャパンかと！「サムライらしくない！」と。
Ｂ：確かに、負けても命に別状はないスポーツの試合で、全力を尽くさないのは、相撲であれば「八百長試合と」言われる。
A：例え、全力を出して、敗れたのであれば、実力だ！とされるだけだ。現に、上位１６チームに入っても初戦で敗れている。どっちもどっちだ！
Ｂ：むしろ、”サムライ”と言うからには、討ち死に覚悟で、全力を尽くして、敗れる方が良いと思う。
A：このような戦術を取るのであれば、「ナデシコ・ジャパン」と名をかえるべきだ！
Ｂ：同時に、このような戦術を認めない様、ルールをかえるべきだ！
